Ferrous fumarate and Folic acid are combined in this medicine.
This medicine is used to prevent iron and folic acid deficiency during pregnancy.
Take Ferrous fumarate + Folic acid exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist whether you should take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.
This medicine is available as a capsule or a tablet.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- anaemia that is not due to a lack of iron
- anaemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency
- other problems with iron in the blood e.g. conditions that lead to iron build-up in soft tissues, problems with red blood cells
- inflammation of the bowel e.g. ulcerative colitis, regional enteritis
- active stomach ulcers
- having repeated blood transfusion
as this medicine may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- erythropoietic protoporphyria (a rare condition affecting the red blood cells)
- folate-dependent tumour
- have had or are being treated for a stomach ulcer
Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding.
Ferrous fumarate + Folic acid may interfere with stool tests. If you are going to have a test for detection of blood in the stool, inform your doctor that you are taking this medicine.
Ferrous fumarate + Folic acid may cause any of the following side effects: constipation, stomach discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and darkening of stools.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- certain antibiotics e.g. tetracycline, chloramphenicol, fluoroquinolones, cefdinir, neomycin
- mycophenolate (medicine used in organ transplants or certain immune disorders)
- medicines that contain salts of calcium, magnesium, and zinc
- medicines for thyroid disease e.g. levothyroxine
- medicines for epilepsy (fits or seizures) e.g. phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone
- sulfasalazine (medicine to treat inflammatory bowel disease)
- medicines to treat Parkinson's disease e.g. levodopa, carbidopa, entacapone
- acetohydroxamic acid (medicine to treat some urinary tract problems)
- medicines used to treat Wilson’s disease (a genetic disorder that causes excess copper to build up in the body) e.g. penicillamine, trientine
- eltrombopag (medicine used to treat a bleeding disorder called immune thrombocytopenia)
- medicines that reduce stomach acid production
- ascorbic acid (vitamin C)
- methyldopa (medicine for high blood pressure)
- dimercaprol (medicine used for various metal poisonings)
- injectable iron preparations
- raltitrexed (medicine used to treat cancer of the colon and rectum)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with this medicine.
Antacids and colestyramine could reduce the effectiveness of Ferrous fumarate + Folic acid. If you must take antacids or colestyramine, take them at least 2 hours after you have taken this medicine.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Avoid taking Ferrous fumarate + Folic acid with food or drinks such as tea, coffee, wholegrain cereals, dairy and soy products, spinach, eggs, and milk. These types of food or drink may make it harder for your body to absorb this medicine.
You may ask your doctor about the types of food or drink you should avoid.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Protect from light.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
